In 2012, Wayne was invited by the U.S. State Department to travel to Palestine to do workshops and perform a piece about Martin Luther King, Jr. Feeling at times a tool of the Government, spreading a story of peace to oppressed people, he falls into an unexpected journey . . . and maybe the joke’s on Uncle Sam.

The May Day Parade
Wayne Harris’ “The May Day Parade” is a solo performance that tells the story of an 8-year-old’s experience watching and marching in the iconic St. Louis event “The Annie Malone May Day Parade”. It is an intimate story of family and faith as well as a story of a proud and vibrant community in the mid-1960s. The story is populated by vivid characters ranging from a grandmother of biblical proportions to a slightly inebriated church deacon/drill instructor to the entire Sumner High School marching band! It is a joyful and inspiring story set against the backdrop of the early civil rights movement, the post-WWII migration of African-Americans to the north, and a changing American landscape. The work embodies the black experience in America while affirming the universal truths that are the foundations of all races. Click the poster to watch it on YouTube!

The Letter: MLK at the Crossroads MarshStream Interview with Excerpts
In the fall of 2013, Wayne Harris was commissioned by the U.S. State Department to travel to Jerusalem and The West Bank to perform his play “The Letter: MLK at the Crossroads”. Wayne enthusiastically accepted the commission. However, there was no play. There was the idea of a play…there were 3×5 cards with notes…lots of ideas…but no actual play. This is the story of how, in a few short weeks, Wayne and long-time collaborator David Ford crafted a story about an Icon of peace to share with Palestinian students, who every day have to make a conscious decision to follow Dr. King’s philosophy of non-violence…or throw rocks at Israeli security forces. The Marsh and MarshStream founder Stephanie Weisman discusses with Wayne, with a few performance excerpts thrown in. Click the poster to watch it on the MarshStream YouTube!
